Game 1

Olympics

Every four years, we see one of our country's most incredible and gifted athletes compete on the international stage at the Olympics. It is an absolutely magnificent occasion. Hungary often wins gold, and the pupils like keeping track of how many bronze, silver, and gold medals we earn. The Olympics might be events that you organize in your classroom during your math block, or during any other topic.

 

Preliminaries

Number of players: 2-12 (in groups)

Age/ Proficiency Level: any (but its optimal for 8-14 years old children)

Preparation Time: 5 minutes

Play Time: 10-20 minutes

Javelin Throw 

Topic: Math (Simple arithmetics)

Preparation

Subtilizing cards

Hula hoops (from PE teacher)

Bean bags (from PE teacher)

Whiteboards + markers

Description:

Setting up a set of objectives (using substitution patterns, number cards, and base ten components), students are given three bean bags and instructed to create a given number with the sum of three numbers. While the other players are observing, they use their whiteboard to double-check the player's arithmetic.The player/team with the most points is declared the winner!

Goal of the Game

To score the most points by solving the task and by throwing the bean bags into the correct Hula hoops

Roles

One helper and one thrower. Both players can help each other discoussing the answer, but there is a designated thrower, who tries to throw the teams bean-bag into the correct circle.

Scoring

A correct calculation is worth one point, and if they sucessfully throw the correct numbers they also get one point. The first team gets a „gold” medal the second a „silver” the third a „bronze” medal

 

An example game

Team one will have to throw out 19 which can be written up as the following 19 = 6 + 4 + 9. So the thrower has to throw their bean-bag into the circle that  represents 6 the other bean-bag into the circle that represents 4 and the third into the circle that represents 9. If the the plan is correct (meaning that they correctly figured out the sum) is worth one point, if they throw the bags in the correct circles thats one point.
