Game design 1

Name of the game: Connect Four Adverbs
Level: B2-C1 but can be adjusted to any level.
Description:
· Setup: The game is played in two opposing teams. The teacher draws a 7 by 6 grid on the board and writes a word in each of them as seen in table 1. Alternatively, it can be projected on a smart board and interaction can happen with touch screen. Two different types of tokens are needed that indicate the two teams (stickers could work, or taped papers) or just simply draw X or O.
· Gameplay: The words on the board are nouns or adjectives. The groups take turns and in each turn a delegate needs to make an adverb from a word they choose. The delegate has to first say the adverb form and if it is correct, they need to go to the board and say a meaningful example sentence with the adverb included. If this is correct, they have to write the adverb in the place of the original word(the teacher can help with spelling) and can place a token (or sign it with anything distinguishable for that resembles their team’s signature) on the box including the guessed word. Tokens can only be placed the same way as in the original Connect Four game, meaning as if gravity was in effect, that is, tokens can be placed in the lowest possible place in any given column. For example, you cannot place a token on ‘argue’ until there has been one placed on ‘difference’ and ‘add’. Teams are given a set amount of time to think before choosing the next word (30 seconds) and for discussing the answer among them and giving their final answer (another 30 seconds) after which the opposing team can make one guess too if the original team failed to do so and steal the opportunity to place a token there, if they wish to (it’s not necessary). If none of the teams guess correctly, the word is still free to be taken. Then, it is next turn.
· Goal: The teams want to win by placing four tokens on the grid next to each other horizontally or vertically or diagonally.
· Comments: I tried to choose easier words for the lower rows so they begin with easier answers and build up to more difficult ones.
Alternate/Extra rules for advanced players:
· There can be a number of special places on the board with special indicators that if a team places a token there, they can roll with a special die that inactivates a random special event or ability. Such can be:
1. The team can remove a token of their choice from the board, resulting in the falling down of the others above it.
2. For one turn, they can force the other team to give the correct adverb form of any of the words before that team can place one in their turn.
3. Taking two turns in a row.
4. Cutting the time to answer of the other team by 10 seconds for one turn.
5. Getting additional 10 seconds to answer for the rest of the game.
6. Switching any two of the remaining words once on the board for the rest of the game.
· Each of these should be placed on a die or be the equivalent of a rolled number on the die.
