DobbEnglish

There is an existing board game called Dobble. I wanted to adapt the framework of the game and use it for learning/practicing words.

Preliminaries

Number of players: 2~15

Age/ Proficiency Level: B1-C1 (depends on the words selected for the game)

Preparation Time: ~60+10 minutes

Play Time: 10-15 minutes

Preparation

Preparation at home:

·       Decide on the topic. I chose London.

·       Select pictures from free icon websites, for example: https://www.flaticon.com/  https://findicons.com/

·       Create cards with an online cardmaker.

·       Print the cards out or create a webpage for generating random cards from the deck. This website will generate random cards from the deck for students. This website is only an idea, I could not create it yet. This website could do it: https://imagepicker.org/

In class preparation: Students should discuss what objects they can see in the pictures. It can be a lead-in game. I created a slide for this.

Hand out the printed version of the cards, or ask students to open the website (which is created for this game.)

Object of the game

This game is good for learning new words in English, training the reaction time of the students and practicing recognising those images fast.

Roles

All students are participants. All of them are equal.

Rules of Play

There will be cards projected on the smartboard or projector. Students get cards or they open the webpage on their phone.

Instruction for students:

Any two cards have exactly one symbol in common. If you see a symbol on the smartboard that is on your phone/card, shout it. Then turn the slide with one page or take another card from your deck. Only one student can turn page one time. Then new card is shown on the starboard. There are 10 pages/cards for you. Whoever reaches the 10th page first, and finds the matching image - wins the competition. You can say the words only in English!

Scoring

The fastest is the winner of the game. There is second and third place too (if more than 3 student is playing).
