Name of game: Storytelling- marathon

What inspired you in the creation of this game?

I have seen a similar game in a Hungarian TV show but unfortunately I forgot the name of it. I just remembered the concept of the game. Once we played a similar game in one of my German classes at university and that inspired me to create this version of the game.

Preliminaries

Number of players: Groups of three or four (the number of groups depends on the number of students)

Age/ Proficiency level: B2-C1

Preparation time: 5-10 mins 

Play time: 10-15 mins (depends on the number of students)

Preparation:

The teacher should find a short text / story (approximately half page long). It is better when the text

contains data about names, dates, numbers, places etc. (e.g. a text about a well-known person’s life).

Then, the teacher should highlight some keywords that can be important in the story.

Object of the game:

Students will be able to retell stories from listening.

Roles:

teams - students is groups of three or four

reader - one student in each group, who will start reading out the short text 

first listener

second listener

third listener

Rules of play:

Since students will be playing in groups, the first step is to choose a team name.

Then, each team should choose one person who will be the “reader.” One team plays at a time,

then the others come. After the first team has chosen the “reader”, the other teammates should go

outside the classroom, except one who will be the “first listener.” The “reader” will read out the short text

(with some highlighted keywords) for the “first listener” who should pay attention to it carefully.

Then, another team member (“second listener”) will enter the classroom, and the “first listener” should tell

him/her the story that he/she heard from memory. The second listener pays attention to it, then he/she

should tell the story to the next teammate. In the end, we listen to the last person and compare the story with

the original one. It is also important that there are some keywords highlighted in the story. The team will get

points after each keyword that has been mentioned in the last version of the story. Then, the same is done

with the second team, third team …. The teacher tells the students in the beginning of the game that they

should pay special attention to the highlighted keywords, because they will get points after these at the end

Scoring:

The teams will get points for each keyword that has been mentioned.
