Every family has its own traditions or things that people might find interesting or weird. Not long ago a close friend said to me that it is weird that I use “jó legyél”(means be good) when I say goodbye. He wanted to know where it came from and I said it is a thing we say to each other between my relatives. It was so natural to me I had not even realized that is not a common phrase to say. This game was created on that experience.

 

Preliminaries

Number of players: 9-16

Age/ Proficiency Level: any level

Preparation Time: 10 minutes to create the cards

Play Time: 15-20 minutes

 

Preparation

I created topics cards. Cards can be created depending on the proficiency level of the students.

 

Object of the game

The goal of the game is to help students to practice asking questions and enrich their vocabulary. Students will be able to develop their communication skills.

Roles

Students can be question askers and family members who have a weird habit.

 

Rules of Play

1.      The teacher puts the students into groups; she/he should create at least 3 groups.

2.      Students have to choose from cards the topic they will discuss and create questions based on that.

3.      Each group can decide what weird habit they will have. For instance they scratch their head before they answer a question or they cannot use words which contain the letter e.

4.      One member from the group goes to another group. There she/he has to ask questions within the chosen topic and based on the answers or the nonverbal signs he/she has to figure the weird habit out.

5.      If she figures it out then she could join the original group and then send someone else to another group.

 

Scoring

There will be a scoring chart on the board. If the student can figure the mania/habit out his/her group will get a point. If the mania/habit remains hidden then the creators of that mania will get a point.
